The Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association (TTCGA) is proud to announce that Nigel Paul (Boxing) and Joelisa Cooper (Netball) have been selected as the official Flag and Baton Bearers for Team Trinidad and Tobago at the Opening Ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
This honour recognizes two outstanding athletes who have consistently demonstrated excellence in their respective sports while exemplifying the values of dedication, leadership, and national pride.
Olympian Nigel Paul has established himself as one of Trinidad and Tobago's premier boxers, representing the country with distinction at regional and international competitions. Known for his powerful performances in the heavyweight division and his Bronze medal at the World Championships, Paul has earned multiple national and international accolades throughout his career and continues to be a respected figure within the boxing community. His selection as Flag Bearer is a fitting recognition of his commitment to the sport and his unwavering dedication to representing Trinidad and Tobago on the international stage.
Joining him as the Baton bearer is accomplished netballer Joelisa Cooper, who has been an integral member of the Trinidad and Tobago national netball programme for several years. Cooper, has represented the country at numerous international competitions, even serving former team captain in various events, has consistently displayed exceptional leadership, determination, and professionalism. Her contributions both on and off the court have made her a role model for aspiring athletes and an ambassador for women's sport in Trinidad and Tobago.
The selection of Paul and Cooper reflects the diversity, strength, and unity of TeamTTO as the nation prepares to compete against athletes from across the Commonwealth.
TTOC President Diane Henderson congratulated both athletes on receiving the honour.
"Being chosen to carry the national flag and the Baton is one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon an athlete. Nigel and Joelisa have earned this recognition through years of dedication, sacrifice, and outstanding service to Trinidad and Tobago sport. They embody the resilience, passion, and excellence that define TeamTTO, and we are incredibly proud to have them lead our delegation into the Opening Ceremony."
Chef de Mission Chanelle Young also welcomed the announcement.
"Nigel and Joelisa are exemplary ambassadors for TeamTTO. Their professionalism, and commitment to their teammates have made a lasting impact within our delegation. We are confident they will carry our nation's flag and Baton with immense pride and inspire every member of TeamTTO and our country as we begin our Commonwealth Games campaign."
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held from 23 July to 2 August 2026, bringing together thousands of athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in a celebration of sport, friendship, and unity.
The Opening Ceremony will take place on July 23, 2026, at 20:00 BST (15:00 AST for Trinidad and Tobago local time) at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland
As TeamTTO prepares to take the world stage once again, the appointment of Nigel Paul and Joelisa Cooper as Flag and Baton Bearers symbolizes not only their individual achievements but also the collective spirit and aspirations of every athlete proudly representing the red, white, and black.
